Omio (previously known as GoEuro) helps customers find and book tickets for travel by train, bus, and flight across Europe. Using Omio, travelers can decide on the best transport option for their needs from over a thousand providers, based on duration, price or mode, instead of having to visit multiple websites to plan a trip. The booking experience is simple and personalized, and is available across all digital channels, including a free mobile app alongside mobile and desktop websites. In addition to booking, Omio provides a price comparison website, an online travel magazine, in-app journey updates and contactless ticketing. The team now has over three hundred employees hailing from fifty countries working in Omio’s offices worldwide.

Inconsistent App Design Tarnished Omio Brand

With over eighteen million application downloads, Omio needed an extensive development team. Due to the large scope and scale of the mobile app, the front-end developers worked in smaller teams, each working on separate user-facing elements such as the booking or search pages.

Each team worked independently using separate code repositories, which often led to them creating visual app elements that looked somewhat different from each other. For example, call-to-action buttons being slightly different shapes. This was detracting from the overall branding of the app, so Omio decided to make a systematic change — implementing a unifying design system to provide brand consistency across all elements.

Design System Part of a Holistic Approach

Omio had six different teams working on the front-end of the app when Xebia came in to assist, each with their own “source of truth.” The company therefore brought these together to work from the same design system using a shared components library, ensuring it achieved the goal of a seamless user experience

Each team of developers was brought into the overall product development process, keeping them all up to date with new features as part of a more holistic approach. A front-end chapter was created, which ensured that all forty-six of the developers would regularly meet to discuss development advancements and jointly add to the shared components library.

“We’re thrilled that the Omio app continues to grow in popularity and scope, and so much of this is down to the visual brand consistency and high-quality user experience Xebia’s help on this project has provided. We know that we’re now ready to proceed at an even faster pace.”

High-Quality User Experience

Omio now has a unified experience right across its app and websites, with the new design system used in over forty projects. Navigation has become easier for users thanks to this new style guide, with all elements such as buttons and search fields now appearing exactly the same across the Omio app.

In addition to the gains made in the UI design, Omio’s development times have been reduced thanks to the large shared library of pre-existing assets — thirty percent of the app’s code is now reused. This streamlined design and development process allows developers time to work on more advanced projects, accelerating the company’s growth and securing its market position.
