Kokoon Mobile Sleep App Delivers Excellent User Experience

Tim Antos, the CEO of London-based startup Kokoon, suffered from sleeplessness for many years. He had found audio to be very effective in helping him relax and fall asleep, but the headphones he used were not designed to be slept in, proving very uncomfortable. Along with colleagues from Imperial College London, Tim created the world’s first electroencephalogram (EEG) headphones that adapt to users and their environments, learning what helps them rest and relax. The company’s flagship product — the world’s first sleep-sensing headphones — was launched on Kickstarter and raised two million dollars in funding.

UX Quality and Innovation at the Heart

After creating the innovative headphones, Kokoon needed to produce a mobile app and backend solution to act as the center of the system, and to ensure an excellent user experience. The headphones themselves used the most sophisticated EEG technology to adapt to users’ needs, so the software and design aspects needed to reflect this.

Kokoon needed an experienced software development team to produce this solution, including a business analyst, quality assurance professionals, and UI designers. Data Drives App Design Process

The headphones’ EEG sensors provide Kokoon with a great deal of user sleep data which is then used to optimize the audio output to improve users’ sleep. Xebia integrated the API that processed this data with both the iOS and Android applications, also helping to design an intuitive frontend interface so that users can gain clear insights into their sleep.

The companies used DevOps methodology to accelerate the development process, meaning they were able to develop the mobile apps and the backend service in parallel, expediting the release date. A hybrid team of Kokoon and Xebia’s developers worked together to carry out thorough testing to ensure that the software solution complied with the startup’s exacting standards.

The MyKokoon application, in connection with the Kokoon headphones, delivered user benefits that led to over fifteen thousand pre-orders even before the official launch and ensured the company’s flagship product achieved sales success upon release.
